Date: February 23, 2025

Two separate teams from Lakeside High School walked away from this weekend’s Savannah River Regional Science Bowl Competition, a jeopardy style academic challenge, with first and second place wins.

The competition was made up of fourteen teams from 10 high schools in South Carolina and the greater Augusta area competed at the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Business and Education Building, tackling questions that covered  biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy and math.

Coming up behind Lakeside High School in third place was a team from John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School.

Winners from the regional competition will advance to the Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., held April 24-28, where they will join other top teams from across the country.

Recognizing future STEM leaders

According to Cindy Hewitt from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) Education Outreach Programs team, the bowl effectively highlights students who are gifted in STEM areas.

“The purpose of the DOE Regional Science Bowl competition is to reward and recognize high students who excel in the areas of science and math,” she said. “Competitions such as this help us identify students who might have a vested interest in [the] future STEM workforce.”

“We encourage the students who compete in the DOE Regional Science Bowl to pursue studies and careers in STEM fields,” Hewitt added.

Competition history

SRS is one of only three DOE sites to participate annually at the regional level since DOE created the National Science Bowl in 1991.

The SRS Science Bowl is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy–Savannah River along with SRNS. Additionally, it is sponsored by USC Aiken’s Ruth Patrick Science Education Center and the Savannah River Section of the American Chemical Society.
