A woman’s boyfriend and ex-boyfriend were charged in a domestic dispute and shooting Tuesday.
Columbia County deputies were called to 682 Shipley Ave. in reference to the incident.
The 34-year-old woman was moving out of the residence at Shipley Avenue, and her boyfriend, Jeleel Cunningham, 31, of Wrightsville, had hired two men to assist with the move. When the woman arrived at the residence, Dontavious Leggett, 30, her ex-boyfriend who was at the scene, attacked her, according to an email from Maj. Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
“The U-Haul driver was on the phone with Cunningham who was en route to the residence. Leggett then proceeded to strike the woman on the side of her face, drag her through the residence and was choking her. He also destroyed several items in the residence by pouring bleach on furniture and breaking a TV. Cunningham arrived and confronted Leggett, who was now outside of the residence. When Cunningham produced a gun, Leggett began to run through the neighborhood. Cunningham fired at Leggett striking a house two times,” the email said.
While deputies were on their way to the scene, they received information that Cunningham had fled the in a white Chevrolet Impala.
Another deputy saw the Impala leave the neighborhood and “initiated a traffic stop. He identified the driver as Jeleel Cunningham and recovered a Glock 43 (9mm) from the front seat. Cunningham was placed into custody,” the email continued.
Cunningham denied having being involved with the shooting, but Leggett admitted to hitting and choking the woman, the report said. The woman and Leggett identified Cunningham as the shooter.
“We were also able to gather video of the incident which shows Cunningham following the victim, holding a gun and hearing shots fired off camera. Cunningham’s vehicle was taken as evidence. Two shell casings were located at the scene,” the email said.
Cunningham was charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property 2nd degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct. Leggett was charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property 2nd degree, battery and theft by taking.”
“Neither subject has been booked at the time of email,” the email said.
