Two additional deaths in Aiken County have been linked to Hurricane Helene, both killed from respiratory problems, the coroner said.

David Welch, 75, of North Augusta, died Friday from respiratory issues related to the hurricane, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a press release.

Rhonda Gabriel, 66, died Tuesday at Aiken Regional Medical Centers, with the cause of death being listed as “respiratory” related to the hurricane.

In a Facebook post, Gabriel’s husband, Ken, announced the death of his wife of 32 years.

“Rhonda passed away suddenly and unexpectedly,” he wrote.

He also linked to a GoFundMe page organized by family friend Scott Ayers. The post says that the hurricane left behind “a trail of devastation that has forever altered the lives of many families.

“Among those profoundly impacted is the Gabriel family, who tragically lost their beloved Rhonda,” Ayers wrote.  “Rhonda was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, and a cherished sister. She brought warmth and joy to everyone around her, always finding ways to uplift those in need. Her infectious laughter and caring spirit created a home filled with love. But on that fateful night, the storm took away more than just a home; it took a precious life.”

The coroner has attributed seven deaths to the hurricane, including four people killed by fallen trees and an elderly Gloverville woman killed in a house fire likely caused by the use of a candle.

Coroner Darryl Ables released this list of hurricane-related deaths.
