Two restaurants showcase bugs in health inspection

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants, pools or hotels received a failing score from inspections on June 9–13.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was a 79 earned by Twin Peaks, located at 277 Robert C Daniel Parkway, in Augusta.

During the inspection, the inspector noted observing improper food storage, which resulted in a nine-point deduction

“Observed shredded cheese, pepperoni, chicken wings, slaw, and more chicken cold holding above 41 degrees F on prep top cooler, reach in cooler and walk in cooler respectively,” the report stated. 

The inspector also noted witnessing expired food, resulting in a four-point reduction.

“Observed whole milk stored past use by date (6/3/25, 5/27/25, 5/19/25). Observed tortilla chips stored past use by date 6/10/25,” the report stated.

The inspector also deducted another three points from the health score for noticing bugs spread throughout the restaurant.

“Observed flies throughout the establishment. Repeat violation,” the report stated.

Lastly, the inspector also deducted three points for seeing employees wearing jewelry while food prepping.

“Observed one food handler wearing Apple watch during prep,” the report stated. “Observed another food handler wearing several bracelets during food prep.”

The second lowest score of the week was an 80 given to Cafe on Eighth, located at 226 Eighth St., in Augusta.

The inspector deducted nine points for noticing foods being improperly stored.

“Observed several time temperature controlled food (cheese, butter, veggie gravy) stored above 41 degrees Fahrenheit,” the report stated.

During the inspection, the inspector deducted another four points for finding food past the expiration date being utilized.

“Observed yogurt and pasta salad stored in RIC past expiration date (May 15th- yogurt, May 30th- pasta salad),” the report stated. “Corrected on site: Discarded food. Repeat violation.”

For noticing once again food being improperly stored, the establishment lost another three points.

“Observed raw shrimp thawing in room temperature water,” the report stated. “Use appropriate thawing methods (running water at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, refrigeration, or microwave when cooking immediately).”

The establishment also lost another point for utilizing incorrect sanitization equipment.

“Observed incorrect test strips for sanitizer. Repeat violation,” the report stated.

The establishment’s score was reduced by another four pints for not properly labeling some food.

“Observed pasta salad stored in [reach-in-cooler] without any labeling,” the report stated.

Finally, the inspector also found insects within the cafe, and deducted another point from the establishment’s health score.

“Observed food debris and dead gnats inside freezer portion of fridge,” the report stated.

Following the cafe’s inspection, the third lowest score of the week was an 80 given to a Holiday Inn Express, located at 444 Broad St., in Augusta.

The inspector deducted nine points for noticing unsafe food storage practices.

“Observed potentially hazardous food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit (dairy in carafe, cream cheese, yogurt in display cooler),” the report stated.

During the inspection, the inspector deducted four more points for noticing food stored in loose containers.

“Store food in tightly covered container (grits, sugar),” the report stated.

Due to a lack of a certified food manager, the establishment’s health inspection score lost another four points.

“No Certified Food Manager for establishment,” the report stated.

The establishment another point for not properly drying utensils.

“Equipment and utensils not properly air-dried,” the report stated.
