The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred on the campus of Josey High School at approximately 5:24 p.m. Saturday.

Deputies located two victims who appeared to have sustained at least one gunshot wound, and they were transported to the hospital for treatment, sheriff’s Sgt. Kimberly Lee said.

“This incident occurred after the football game outside of the football stadium. It was reported that an altercation took place prior to the shooting,” Lee said in a press release.

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Investigators are on scene, she said.

Several witnesses reported seeing a victim shot in the head. Deidre Kitchens said she had to leave because “Josey shooting led to one guy shot twice.”

“We seen a guy go to his car to get his gun,” she said, telling Facebook friends that she was “feeling angry.”

The game had already ended, with Westside High School defeating Josey 19-7 during Josey’s Homecoming game.

The school district said the incident happened in the tailgate area of the T.W. Josey High School campus.

“As official T.W. Josey Homecoming post game tailgate activities were coming to an end, a shooting with injuries occurred,” Chief Public Relations Officer Lynthia Ross said. “Richmond County School System Safety and Security and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office are on the scene. Two people have been transported for medical treatment. Our thoughts are with those affected by the incident. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.”

The Saturday shootings come after two McDuffie County teens were accused of firing their weapons outside the Laney-Thomson football game on Friday night in Augusta. No one was injured, but the gunfire caused a panic and led to the suspension of the game.
