Two women were arrested Thursday, July 7 after neglecting an elderly relative in Grovetown.
According to the release from Grovetown Police Department Chief Jamey Kitchens, Grovetown Investigators and City of Grovetown Code Enforcement Officers, responded to a residence on the 500 block of Jackson Street in reference to a complaint regarding neglect to an elderly person.
Rebecca Turner, 74, is disabled and lived with her caretakers – her daughter and grand-daughter.
Grovetown investigators observed the “interior of the residence to be blanketed in animal feces, including the floors, walls and windows,” according to the release. Turner was also found to have cuts, scrapes and marks on her body, which appeared to have been caused by the animals within the home.
Turner was also unable to use her wheelchair because it filled with animal feces. There was also unusable showers and toilets in the home according to the release.
All three residents of the home reported to have had animal feces partially covering clothing that they were wearing as well as on their bare skin.
Columbia County Animal Control responded to the scene and removed over two dozen dogs, multiple cats, and several reptiles according to the release.
Turner was removed from the residence and transported to an area hospital for medical treatment and evaluation.
The victim’s granddaughter, Hannah Nicole Brighurst, 23, was arrested and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center. The victim’s daughter, Latisha Lucinda Brighurst, 47, was transported for medical evaluation and will be committed at a later date.
Both are charged with neglect to a disabled adult, elder person, or resident and cruelty to animals.
