USC Aiken hosting homecoming 5k run

The University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA) will host its first homecoming 5k and fun run to raise funds for the Sandy Rogers and Scotty Richardson Memorial Scholarship. 

The race will take place on the USCA campus on Saturday, Feb. 24. The 5k race will begin at 8 a.m., and the fun run will begin at 9 a.m.

This scholarships honors two Aiken police officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2011 and 2012. It will be awarded to students who are pursuing a career in criminal justice field with a financial need, and it will be awarded by the sociology program at USCA. 

The scholarship was originally established by friends and family of Rogers and Richardson in 2013. The sociology department proposed a 5k run to maximize the funds available for the scholarship. 

The 5k and fun run are open to all ages and abilities. Each 5k participant will receive a t-shirt, and finalists will receive a medal. This is a chipped-time race. 

The race will start at the USCA Convocation Center, 2049 Champion Way, Graniteville. Family members of Rogers and Richardson will speak during the opening ceremony. 

USCA encourages participants to stay on campus after the race for a Homecoming Tailgate and the Homecoming baseball game versus Tampa at 3 p.m.
