More than 300 graduates crossed the stage at the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Convocation center on Thursday, Dec. 12, marking the culmination of studies for 222 undergraduates representing diverse disciplines.
In addition to 84 graduate students graduating, among the top programs in the ceremony were business administration, nursing, psychology and STEM fields, such as applied computer science and mechanical engineering.
USCA Chancellor Daniel J. Heimmermann addressed the graduates with a message of optimism, emphasizing their potential to impact the world.
“Tonight, many of you will take the next step in your professional journeys, carrying the knowledge and talents you’ve honed here at USCA into your careers, your communities, and beyond,” Heimmermann said.
A highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of the Outstanding Student of the Year, Melvin Archie Jr., who graduated with a degree in Education.
Archie was honored for his academic excellence and his leadership and commitment to service throughout his college career, according to a press release from USCA.
Reflecting on the recognition of his accomplishments, Archie said, “this award means so much to me, not just for my academic achievements but for the personal growth I’ve experienced through the relationships I’ve built and the leadership opportunities I’ve embraced.”
Some of Archie’s key accomplishments include:
- Completing the Call Me MISTER Summer Internship Program, which mentors and supports future teachers from underrepresented communities.
- Receiving the Distinguished MISTER Award in 2022 for his leadership in the program.
- Serving as team captain of the Pacer Men’s Basketball Program.
- President, Sigma Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, 2023-2024.
- Resident mentor, University Housing.
“[This is] a reflection of my commitment to excellence in all areas of my life, and I’m incredibly proud to be recognized in this way,” Archie said.
Notably, the commencement ceremony did not feature a guest speaker but focused on the achievement of the graduating students.
According to a press release from USCA, the college continues to make “significant strides” in growing its impactful programs in fields such as cybersecurity, healthcare, and business.
By contributing to the university’s efforts to prepare graduates who are ready to meet the challenges of an evolving global landscape, Heimmermann said the Class of 2024 adds to USCA’s growing momentum.
“The Class of 2024 symbolizes a renewed hope for our community, our nation, and our world,” Heimmermann said.
