The University of South Carolina Aiken welcomed the class of 2028 during the Freshman Convocation event on Monday, Aug. 19.

Students met at the quad on campus before marching over to the Convocation Center. This march symbolizes the welcoming embrace of the university community just before classes begin, according to a press release from the university.

“We’re looking for more student involvement this year,” said Judson Pickett, former president of the Student Government Association. “My advice for all the freshman this year is to not be shy. When you put yourself in uncomfortable positions that’s when you grow the most. If there’s something out there for you go for it.”

USCA welcomed 693 freshmen this year, which is the largest first-year class in history. Last year there were 611 full-time freshmen.

Student discuss their goals

Marilyn Waldee, who is majoring in business administration, said she was drawn to the school due to the close community and the potential advantages of her major.

“I’m really anxious just to learn where my classes are,” Waldee said. “My dad is a disabled veteran, which means that my education is free coming here.”

Leslie Diaz, a freshman who is majoring in process engineering, said she was inspired to chose her major thanks to her mother.

“My mother’s career throughout her life is what really inspired me to choose my major. I choose USCA because of its small campus vibe,” Diaz said.

Classes began at USCA on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
