Valentine’s Day options – dog adoptions, axe throwing and wedding ceremonies

At this time of year, stores are teeming with loads of red and pink cards, flowers and heart-shaped boxes filled with chocolate.

But if the traditional Valentine’s Day scene isn’t what you’re looking for, there are some different options available.

Unattached this Valentine’s Day? Who needs a date anyway – a human one, that is?

“Find the love of your life” at the Aiken County Animal Shelter this weekend, according to the Friends of the Animal Shelter Facebook page.

The shelter is overcrowded, and a furry companion is waiting for a forever home.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, adoption fees at the shelter on Wire Road are $14.

Your significant other didn’t send flowers?

Bedford Greenhouses has you covered.

Make an arrangement of your own at the Valentine’s at Bedfords; event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Bedford’s is located at 1023 Oleander Dr.

The day will feature chicken minis and mimosas and a candy bar.

An alternative to a candlelight dinner and waiting hours at a restaurant for a table would be brunch at SRP Park in North Augusta.

Started last Valentine’s Day, the Valentine’s brunch features two seatings at the stadium’s WOW clubhouse. The first seating will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday with the second one from 12:30 to 2 p.m. His and hers gift bundles are available as add-ons at the GreenJackets’ website, https://www.milb.com/augusta. Tickets are $80 per couple or $150 for four.

On Valentine’s Day itself, treat your significant other to a red rose, champagne service and one hour of axe throwing at Broad Axe Throwing on Broad Street.

The Axes and O’s event is $69 per couple and is limited to 24 couples.

Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre’s production of “Getting Sara Married” will be performed at Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre, Building 32100, Third Avenue Feb. 11, 12, 14 and 18-20. Dinner will be at 6:45 p.m. followed by the performance at 8 p.m., Feb. 11, 12, 14, 18 and 19. A matinee will be Feb. 20 with a late lunch at 1:45 p.m. followed by the show at 3 p.m.

Tickets range from $30 for the show only to $54 for dinner and the show for the general public Discounts available for active-duty military, senior citizens, college students and children.

And if you want to make it official and tie the knot on Valentine’s Day or for those people who have a lucky number of 2, Richmond County Judges are welcoming couples to get married on Feb. 14 or Feb. 22 (2/22/22).

“Chief Judge Carletta Sims Brown and judges of the Richmond County Civil and Magistrate Court will officiate ‘Celebrating Love’ marriage ceremonies for Richmond County couples who want to get married on Valentine’s Day or “Twosday”, 2-22-22,” according to a news release.

“The Civil and Magistrate Court, the people’s court, is committed to serving citizens in ways that uplift the community at large. Considering the challenges many have faced over the past two years; these weddings are symbolic of the promises that the future holds as the Covid-19 conditions decrease and joys of everyday life increase,” the news release continued.

The registration deadline for Valentine’s weddings is 5 p.m., Wednesday Feb. 9 and the deadline for Feb. 22 weddings is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Marriage licenses must be purchased in advance. Contact the Probate Court for questions regarding obtaining the license. The wedding ceremony will be free. Each couple may invite two guests. Masks will be required, the release said.
