TowerCom Enterprises, a telecommunications company based in Neptune, Fla., is seeking to build a cell tower on undeveloped land along Mike Padgett Highway.

In April, TowerCom, along with William Wilson of Millen, Ga., petitioned the Richmond County Planning Department for a special exception to build a telecom facility on Wilson’s property at 4767 Mike Padgett Hwy.

Verizon Wireless intends to lease 10,000 square feet of space near the northwest corner of the parcel, which is currently zoned Agricultural.

TowerCom plans to build a nearly 200-foot monopole telecommunications tower at the site, over 250 from the street right-of-way, and 215 feet from a home that already exists on the property.

Verizon already has three wireless towers within five miles of site, but aims to construct this facility to “satisfy [its] coverage objective for the area,” as those existing towers don’t have the capacity to co-locate.

The Augusta Commission granted Verizon a special exception to build a tower at this location in early 2021, which expired when the wireless provider didn’t file for a business license within the required six-month period after approval.

A letter of intent from Doyle Consulting sent to the Planning Department on behalf of TowerCom indicates the company plans to apply for a building permit to begin construction of the tower if the exception is approved.

A&R Electric, an installation company headquartered on Wrightsboro Road, is looking to move its operations to Gordon Highway. The business, which specializes in new residential construction, submitted a request to rezone two acres at 3337 Gordon Highway, near the Columbia County line, from Agricultural to B-2 General Business.

There the company plans to develop 1,000 square foot office building — which would be used to supplement operations and not take service calls, according to the letter of intent — and a 1,800 square foot storage warehouse.

The Augusta Planning Commission is scheduled to hear both items in its meeting on Monday, June 5, at 3 p.m.
