A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Kameron Scott Mason, a 28-year-old property manager at McArthur Park Apartments.

Authorities also confirmed new details showing that Mason returned fire during the incident, striking one of the suspects in an act of self-defense before he was fatally shot.

Cam’ron Barber-Harris, 20, of Hephzibah, was arrested this week and charged with murder alongside Tyler Lamont Preston, also 20, who was taken into custody the night of the shooting.

The incident unfolded on May 22 around 10:27 p.m. at the apartment complex’s pool area on the 1100 block of Integrity Drive. Investigators say Mason confronted a group of five individuals — including Preston, Barber-Harris, and three others — who were attempting to access the closed pool. Mason was trying to get them out, since the pool was closed. An altercation followed, during which the suspects allegedly fired multiple rounds. One of the bullets struck Mason.

Before he was fatally wounded, Mason returned fire and hit Barber-Harris in the leg. Barber-Harris was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is under guard and will be booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center following his release. Preston was detained at the scene and charged with murder the following day.

Mason, a resident of Augusta, was pronounced dead at 11:36 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Christopher Langford. He was widely known as a dedicated property manager who had been working to improve safety and enforce rules at the complex.

Family members described Mason as a devoted father to his two young children, Kamden and Remi Mason, and remembered him as a loyal son, brother, and partner. An obituary shared by the family reflected on his courage, strength, and deep commitment to those he loved, noting that his legacy would live on through the values he instilled in his children.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
