The Augusta Sports Council is looking for over 300 volunteers to assist in the future USA Cycling Masters and Para Road National Championships.
From August 22 to the 27, an expected 600-800 athletes will be competing for national championships in road and individual time trials on Fort Gordon.
“This year’s USA Cycling Masters and Para-Cycling Road National Championships is special because not only does it include both Masters championships, as well as Para-cycling Championships, but it’s mostly taking place on a military installation which is a very unique experience for athletes,” said Volunteer Director and Committee Affairs Coordinator of the Augusta Sports Council Heather O’Brien.
According to O’Brien, the goal of the event is to make Augusta a sporting destination by hosting and supporting organizers like the USA Cycling; hopefully, more organizations and athletes will be encouraged to return to town year after year.
Volunteer roles will involve a range of activities including: event set-up and breakdown, registration, athlete hydration, course marshals and more. Volunteer commitments can range anywhere from two to six hours depending on the individual’s chosen role and availability, O’Brien.
“Volunteers get a sense of community, an outlet from the everyday monotony, and get to witness something exceptional in supporting athletes at the top of their tiers,” she said. “Other than a method of giving back to their community, volunteers will get a fun t-shirt and free food.”
According to a press release from the Augusta Sports Council, this event is the second time in five years that the council will host the USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships.
“This year marks the 8th USA Cycling National Championship to take place in Augusta in 11 years. Additionally, it is part of a two year contract to bring the National Championships back next year,” said O’Brien.

“The Augusta Sports Council would not be able to bring events like these to our area if it wasn’t for the outstanding and continued support from our community and neighbors. Augusta has the best people and the best volunteers,” said O’Brien.
