Walmart is ensuring that Augusta’s firefighters on duty won’t miss out on this weekend’s Super Bowl fanfare by providing them with tailgate meal bundles.

This is part of a statewide initiative in which the superstore chain is delivering these bundles to 59 firehouses across Georgia, including all 19 Augusta Fire Department stations.

A surprise delivery was made at Augusta Fire Station #2 on Feb. 6, where Walmart employees presented firefighters with game-day essentials including wings, chips, dip and beverages.

Strengthening community partnerships

A total of 23 bags and four coolers of food were dropped off at the #2 station, and these were distributed by firefighters that same day to other local stations.

“We’ve got enough to go around to every station in Augusta,” said Philip Myhand, store manager for Walmart in Evans.

“We wanted to do something to give back to firefighters in the community,” he added.

Fire Chief Antonio Burden said the surprise was of great impact to the fire station, noting that firefighters spend around a third of their lives working together.

“This weekend is about coming together…this kind gesture means a lot to us,” said Burden.

Burden said he expected the same reaction from the other stations who were set to receive meals later in the day.

“I’m sure there’ll be smiles throughout the whole team,” he said.
