Richmond County authorities are searching for a man accused of violently attacking a woman while giving her a ride home, leaving her in critical condition after allegedly trying to steal her purse.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the assault happened around 1:07 a.m. Sunday on the 1500 block of Twiggs Street. Investigators say 29-year-old Wilber Martinez-Duran began striking the 48-year-old victim with a bottle while she was in his vehicle, causing deep lacerations to her face and back.

The woman was transported to Wellstar MCG Health, where she remains in critical condition.

Martinez-Duran is wanted on charges of aggravated assault and attempted armed robbery. Deputies say he should be considered armed and dangerous. He is described as a Hispanic male, 29 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Investigators believe Martinez-Duran frequents the 2500 block of Milledgeville Road, the street where he lives in Augusta. Warrants are on file for his arrest.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Investigator Tanner Baughman or any on-call investigator at the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 706-821-1097 or 706-821-1020.
