With temperatures expected to drop into the low 20s on Tuesday, Dec. 3, Augusta has activated warming centers across multiple locations to provide safe and warm environments for residents during the extreme cold weather.
Individuals in need of a shelter clearance may go to Richmond County Sheriff’s Office before 5 p.m. to obtain documentation from the Records Bureau, according to a press release from the Augusta Fire/EMA Department.
After 5 p.m. or if one is unable to go to the Records Bureau, locals may call the Sheriff’s Office Dispatcher at 706-821-1080 and a deputy will be sent to their location to provide the clearance.

Pick-Up Location:
- Broad Street Transfer Facility, 1546 Broad St.
- May Park Community Center, 622 Fourth St.
Drop-Off Location:
- Augusta Rescue Mission, 526 Walker St. (Route #3 Gold Line/East Augusta)
- Garden City Rescue Mission, 828 Fenwick St. (Route #6 Brown Line/Gordon Highway)
- Salvation Army Center of Hope, 1384 Greene St. (Route #3 Gold Line/East)
“The bus service has begun operating as of 3 p.m. and will run continuously until 8 p.m.,” according to a press release from the Augusta Fire/EMA Department.”Individuals unable to get to the pick up locations and in need of a ride should call 706-821-1719 before 8 p.m.”
The city will also be offering daytime warming centers, and those locations are listed at augusta.gov.
“Augusta Transit will not providing free transportation to the daytime shelters, but individuals can use Augusta Transit’s normal bus routes during regular operating hours to get to these locations,” according to a press release from the Augusta Fire/EMA Department.
