The Augusta Genealogical Society will present a series of webinars to help budding as well as seasoned genealogists research their family trees.
“This is the first year we’ve done it this way,” said Daphne Hopson, a public relations representative for the organization. “We used to have Footprints, an all-day seminar in February.”
The first webinar will focus on vital records and will be held Feb. 27.
Hopson said pre-COVID people often showed up at the organization’s Adamson Library on Claussen Road with lots of questions and requests to use their resources.
“Only about 10 percent of genealogical information is online,” said Hopson.

Researching a family line often requires a lot of trips to places where vital records are kept and navigating the documents can be challenging.
Debra Brodowski is the series presenter.
The first webinar will focus on identifying commonly used vital records, where to find them and discovering how to use them.
It will be at 1 p.m. Registration is required. Registrants will receive a link to the webinar via email. The webinar is free to genealogical society members. The cost of the entire series is $35 and will include a one-year membership to the organization.
Other topics include using census records and their shortcomings on April 24; using wills and probate records on May 22; using newspapers to learn about births, marriages and deaths on July 24; using directories such as religious, school-related, professional, agricultural and business directories on Oct. 23 and evaluating evidences found in records on Nov. 13.

The Augusta Genealogical Society has special collections and other references to help people in their research. The library is open by appointment.
The webinar series isn’t the only programming the organization will offer in 2021.
Other upcoming events include a March 27 virtual program with Kenneth Thomas Jr., who will talk about DNA: Finding Cousins Through Chromosomes, and Marian Burk Wood’s June 26 webinar on Planning a Future for Your Family’s Past. Wood’s talk will focus on photos, stories, documents and heirlooms and how to organize them.
The society’s annual symposium will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 7 with Elissa Scalise Powell. It will be virtual this year as well.
