MARIETTA, Ga. — Wellstar Health System has selected Ketul J. Patel as its next president and CEO.
Patel, who currently serves as CEO of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and president of CommonSpirit Health’s Pacific Northwest Region, is set to join Wellstar in late October.
Patel will succeed Candice L. Saunders, who announced her retirement in January after an exceptional career.
Under Saunders’ leadership, Wellstar became one of Georgia’s top health systems, recognized for its innovative care and commitment to community health, according to a press release from Wellstar Health System.
“We had the privilege of reviewing nearly 200 candidates, including several outstanding internal leaders,” said Frank Ros, former chair of the Wellstar Board of Trustees and leader of the search committee. “Ketul’s experience in transformational leadership and his focus on people-centered care made him the ideal choice.”
Patel’s leadership spans 12 hospitals and more than 300 patient care locations. In 2021, he led the merger that formed Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, one of Washington state’s largest health providers.
Under his guidance, the system earned top-tier Leapfrog Patient Safety Grades and expanded its network across multiple states, according to a press release from Wellstar Health System.
“I’m honored to join Wellstar and contribute to its mission of delivering compassionate, world-class care,” Patel said. “With a strong foundation laid by Candice and the executive team, Wellstar is positioned for continued success. I look forward to expanding access to care across Georgia and collaborating with the community.”
Patel holds dual master’s degrees in health administration and business administration from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.
He is a past chair of the Washington State Hospital Association and currently serves on several influential boards, including CEOs Against Cancer, according to a press release from Wellstar Health System.
Saunders expressed confidence in Patel’s ability to lead Wellstar forward.
“Ketul’s ability to connect with people and navigate complex health care challenges ensures Wellstar will continue to thrive as a patient-focused organization,” she said.
Wellstar, known for its integrated care model, operates Georgia’s largest trauma network and invests in technology and innovation to improve patient outcomes.
The Wellstar Board of Trustees is expected to confirm Patel’s appointment later this month.
