In a letter sent to players, families, and supporters, Westminster Head of School Dr. Shawn M. Brower announced the school’s football program will transition from 8-man to 11-man play beginning next season.
The move comes after eight seasons of success in 8-man football, during which Westminster compiled a 63–17 record. Westminster also secured two state championships and finished as state runner-up twice.
Why the program is moving to 11-man football
School leaders cited declining participation in 8-man football across the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA) as a key factor in the decision. Two years ago, the league featured 19 teams at the 8-man level. That number is likely to drop to 10 next season, with Westminster projected to be the only 3A program remaining among mostly smaller 1A schools.
Administrators also pointed to concerns about future scheduling and competitive balance as the school continues to grow.
According to the school, the transition to 11-man football is going to be implemented gradually. Westminster will compete for the next two seasons in a region made up of teams of similar size and ability. This will allow some flexibility to complete its schedule during the transition period.
School officials said the approach is intended to prioritize student-athlete development and safety, rather than placing the program immediately into a full 3A 11-man schedule.
Head football coach Chris Murphey expressed enthusiasm for the move.
“I’m all in,” Murphey said in the announcement.
Westminster’s head of school said the decision was made after extensive discussions with the football coaching staff.
As part of the transition, the school has hired a full-time, certified athletic trainer for the 2026–27 school year. They also plan to add additional position coaches. Officials expect increased interest in the program as the school enters a new admissions cycle and builds on the middle school’s existing 11-man football experience.
