The Westminster Wildcats’ varsity football team is heading back to the GIAA 8-man state championship game Thursday, setting up a championship rematch with Sherwood Christian Academy.
The Wildcats were defeated by Sherwood Christian Academy in last year’s state championship game 36-26. This loss unfortunately would end Westminster’s chance at an undefeated state championship dream season.
Led by a surging sophomore quarterback and a stout defense, Westminster enters Thursday’s championship matchup confident and motivated for redemption.
Young QB steps into the spotlight
Sophomore quarterback Julian Lively has taken command of the offense in his first season as the starter. Westminster Head Coach Chris Murphey said Lively is showing steady growth and has emerged as a reliable leader for the Wildcats.
“Julian has really stepped into his role as the leader of the offense this season,” Coach Murphey said. “He has a great work ethic, is very intelligent, and is a natural competitor. He has improved each week and is playing at a high level.”
Grinalds anchors elite Westminster defense
The Wildcats’ defense has been one of the toughest in the GIAA 8-man ranks this year, only giving up 10 points per game on average. The defense is anchored by senior linebacker Porter Grinalds. Grinalds is a four-year starter whose IQ and motor set the tone for everyone else on the field.
“Porter’s vast amount of football experience coupled with his intelligence and excellent work ethic have placed him at the top of the GIAA as far as football players are concerned,” Murphey said. “He is highly respected by his teammates and opponents alike. Porter is a true natural leader and it is like having a coach on the field.”
A rematch built on discipline
Westminster now prepares for another meeting with Sherwood Christian Academy. Coach Murphey emphasized that SCA is very well coached, which leaves very little room for errors.
“They play the game at a high level and make few mistakes,” Murphey said. “We are going to have to play well together as a team and not make very many mistakes in order to win. This game will probably be decided by a handful of plays. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win on Thursday.”
Chance for redemption
Although last season ended in heartbreak, the Wildcats set a goal last year to return to the championship stage. With that being accomplished, Coach Murphey said they are grateful for the opportunity.
“We are thankful to God for providing us the opportunity to go back to the state championship game this season and get to play in a rematch with Sherwood,” he said. “This opportunity was the goal set by our team a year ago, and now we look forward to the chance of redemption.”
Kickoff is set for Thursday 5 p.m. at Cavalier Field in Macon.
