What’s happening in Columbia County government?

This week is busy in Columbia County with the Board of Elections, Board of Commissioners, Library Board and Planning Commission all meeting.

Board of Elections

The Columbia County Board of Elections will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at the Board of Elections office, 610 Ronald Reagan Drive, Bldg. G3. On the agenda is for the board members to discuss the May 21 general primary, receive a legislative update and hear from a community member about a hand-count demonstration that was held in March.

Board of Commissioners

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 in the auditorium at the Evans Government Center complex. On the agenda is several zoning items, including the Rezoning from R-A (Residential Agricultural) to S-1 (Special) for 4080 Gordon Highway, which was postponed from the March 19 meeting. The applicant wants to put up a fence instead of trees as a buffer and the location is not permanent. According to the agenda document, staff is recommending approval with several conditions. 

Commissioners will discuss a rezoning from R-2 (Single Family Residential) to C-C (Community Commercial) & C-2 (General Commercial) at 170 South Belair Road. According to the agenda document, the applicant is looking at putting a Moby’s Car Wash on the property. The Planning Commission voted against the rezoning earlier this month and staff is recommending disapproval of the item. 

The Board of Commissioners will present a proclamation declaring May as National Tennis Month.

Library Board

The Columbia County Library Advisory Board will meet at 11:30 a.m. in classrooms B&C at the Evans Library. Items to be discussed under new business include updates on bylaws, request for reconsideration and collection development policy. 

Under unfinished business to discuss are request for reconsideration of “You Know Me Well” by Nina LaCourand “A Different Kind of Normal” by Abigail Balfe. Board members will also discuss the following reconsiderations that are being re-reviewed: “The Black Flamingo” by Dean Alta, “I’ll Give You the Sun” by Jandy Nelson and “True You: A Gender Journey” by Gwen Agna.

Two new request for reconsideration will be going before the committee: “The Bare-Naked Book by Kathy Stinson” and “Tell Me: What Children Really Want to Know about Bodies, Sex, and Emotions” by Katharina von der Gathen.

There are also requests to speak from Sea Jay, Priscilla Bence and Lina Bracci.

Planning Commission

The Columbia County Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 in the auditorium at the Evans Government Center complex. There are several public hearings scheduled to go before the commissioners.

There is a rezoning from R-1 (Single Family Residential) to S-1 (Special) for 5102 Hereford Farm Road for a proposed native plant nursery. 

There is a request for Conditional Use for Light Industrial Uses at 3475 River Watch Parkway for a cabinetry construction and installation business going in front of the commissioners. 

A change of conditions for 428 Lewiston Road to allow a free standing sign is also up for consideration.
