Richmond County authorities arrested a North Augusta man for impersonating a police officer following a traffic stop reported earlier this month.
Mason Marsh, 22, was taken into custody on Wednesday by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division. Marsh faces charges of impersonating a police officer and false imprisonment. The charges stem from an incident reported on Friday.
Investigators say Marsh conducted a traffic stop on a female driver using blue and red lights mounted on his light gray Hyundai Santa Cruz. Marsh identified himself as a police officer and told the driver he pulled her over for cutting him off in traffic. When asked to show a badge, Marsh was unable to provide one. The victim told Marsh she was calling the police, prompting him to return to his vehicle and leave, warning her that he had her address, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office warns that impersonating an officer is a serious felony that erodes public trust and law enforcement integrity. Officials remind the public to be cautious during traffic stops, especially if the vehicle is unmarked. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, activate hazard lights, and move to well-lit, populated areas such as gas stations. Calling 911 to verify a stop is also advised.
Anyone who has been stopped or approached by Marsh claiming to be a law enforcement officer is asked to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 706-821-1020.
