Woman’s Body Found in Shallow Grave in Backyard of Augusta Home

An investigation into an injured woman on Tobacco Road Thursday night turned into a homicide case with the discovery of a woman’s body in a shallow grave.

The deceased woman’s identity has not been confirmed or released. Coroner Mark Bowen is calling it a “suspicious death” after the woman’s body was found behind a home on the 1700 block of Tobacco Road. She was officially pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m. Thursday.

“The victim has not yet been identified but is in progress,” the coroner said in a Friday morning press release. “Identity will be released when known and next of kin notified.”

The sheriff’s office first went out to the home on Thursday afternoon for a woman with injuries to her body. That woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Further investigation revealed the discovery of the body.

RCSO, June 3, 9:31 p.m.

On June 3, 2021 at 4:25 PM, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 1700 Block of Tobacco Rd.  Upon arrival, Deputies located a female who had injuries to her body and was transported to the hospital for treatment.  Her condition is unknown at this time. Investigators have responded to the scene and are actively working this case.  No further information is available at this time.

RCSO, June 4, 5:06 a.m.

Further investigation of the suspicious situation call at the 1700 block of Tobacco Rd  on June 3, 2021 has resulted in the location of  an unidentified female body in the backyard of a residence. The body is being sent to GBI for an autopsy at this time. The investigation is still on-going and no other details are being released at this time.

The Coroner’s Office is investigating a suspicious death on the 1700 blk. Tobacco Road. The body of a female was found in a shallow grave in the backyard of a residence on the 1700 Blk. Tobacco Road last night. The deceased was pronounced dead at 2248 hrs. The victim has not yet been identified but is in progress. Identity will be released when known and next of kin notified……. The deceased has an autopsy scheduled at the GBI.
