Wycliffe Gordon has been performing concerts with his friends for years.

This year, the Wycliffe Gordon and Friends concert will be live-streamed Feb. 18, and it will help raise money for the Augusta African-American Historical Society.

“This concert will have new music that tells the stories of African-American history and history in Augusta,” said Gordon, the multiple award-winning jazz trombonist.

One of the pieces in the spotlight will be a work the Douglass Theatre in Macon commissioned Gordon to write. Built in 1921, the theater had well-known singers including Otis Redding, James Brown, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith and Little Richard perform on its stage.

According to Gordon’s website, the piece “showcases the early beginnings and the 100 years of growth that make up the rich history of this iconic building.”

The concert will feature jazz standards as well as “foot-tapping funks,” according to a news release. The new works will “celebrate the Black experience and explore themes of love tied to both Valentine’s Day and Black History Month.”

Gordon said he’s pleased to be able to use the concert to raise funds for the African-American Historical Society.

The African-American Historical Society’s goal is to “enable the community, especially young people, to learn more about the fascinating history of outstanding Black Augustans who have made a major impact on the city, the state and the world,” the news release said.

The event will be streamed at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at https://growingaugusta.co/aaahs. The cost is $35.
