An Augusta man has been arrested on attempted rape and other charges.

Thomas A. Smith-Abraham, 28, was arrested Monday, May 30. He is currently being held without bond on charges that stem from a March 17 incident.

On that day, a 23-year-old woman at University Hospital’s emergency room told a Richmond County Sheriff’s officer that she does hairstyling from her home, and earlier that day Smith-Abraham was invited to come to get his hair twisted. She said he was rude, and when she told him to stop trying to touch her and to leave, Smith-Abraham grabbed her by the neck and slammed her into a wall.

She told the officer Smith-Abraham had her trapped against the wall and sexually assaulted her before she was able to break free and run outside. She said he caught up with her, grabbed her and slammed her against his vehicle and slammed her head against the windshield before she was able to get loose and run. She told the officer Smith-Abraham took her phone, but she was able to use an App to find it at an address on Richmond Avenue.

The officer went to the address and found the car she described. Its windshield was damaged. The victim’s phone was found under a recycling can one street over from Smith-Abraham’s vehicle, according to the incident report.

In 2017, Smith-Abraham pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of family violence battery, trespass, theft, cruelty to children and obstruction of an officer. According to court records, he beat a woman and tried to suffocate her in front of her child. He broke her front door and took her cell before running from a sheriff’s officer.
