The Phinizy Center for Water Sciences unveiled its first nature park sculpture Wednesday.

Asheville, N.C. sculptor David Sheldon created “Eco-Friendly,” a piece that expresses themes of water, water-conservation and ecosystems while incorporating the center’s dragonfly logo.

Funded by the Georgia Rehabilitation Institute, the sculpture is located in front of the visitor’s parking lot so that it’s easily accessible, according to a news release.

An artist search is underway for another Augusta sculpture.

The deadline for the Twiggs Circle sculpture is June 1.

The Greater Augusta Arts Council is searching for an individual sculptor or team to create a “unique, durable, low-maintenance, meaningful sculpture to be placed in the center of the fully landscaped Twiggs Circle traffic roundabout,” according to a news release.

The selected artist will receive a $15,000 stipend to cover the expenses related to the sculpture’s creation.

The purpose of the sculpture is to create a highly visible, visually pleasing addition to the historic Golden Blocks. The Golden Blocks project highlights the rich cultural legacy of the historically Black neighborhoods of Laney Walker and Bethlehem. The sculpture is intended to last for 50 years in good condition and incorporate the conceptual theme of the History of Augusta’s Black Medical Community,” the news release said.

The installation will begin in December of 2022. Applications and more information can be found by visiting https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=10216.

Applications are also being accepted for city arts grants program.

The city of Augusta allocates funds that the Greater Augusta Arts Council distributes In the non-profit arts community.

“For fiscal year 2023, funds will be re-allocated in increments to support general operating expenses or special projects — up to $7,000 for general operating expenses and up to $5,000 for art projects,” according to a news release.

Online applications are available at www.augustaarts.com/grants. They must be submitted via email to admin@augustaarts.com. Supporting documents must be mailed, emailed or hand delivered to the arts council’s office within the application period.

 The deadline is 3 p.m. July 13.
