The Augusta Press and its staff received several awards, including one for general excellence at the Georgia Press Association convention in Jekyll Island.
The Augusta Press took third place for general excellence among newspapers in its category, and one of its reporters, Liz Wright, was named one of two emerging journalist of the year. Wright, who is also a student at Augusta University, covers education and features for the paper, and also helps produce the daily newsletter.
“We’re so proud of Liz,” said Executive Editor Debbie Reddin van Tuyll. “She is such an asset to the paper. She has earned this award in so many ways.”
Reporter Sandy Hodson, who moved to the Charleston Post and Courier earlier this year, took two first place awards, one for breaking news for her coverage of former Richmond County Chief Assistant Solicitor Geoffrey Ails’ arrest for domestic violence. Her second award, first place in enterprise reporting, was for her 14-part investigation of the Brunswick Judicial District.
Photographer Mike Adams swept the sports feature category, taking first, second and third place.
Scott Hudson, the Augusta Press chief reporter and editorial page editor, won second place in the breaking news category, and reporter Skyler Q. Andrews took third place in news photography.
