Columbia County authorities have arrested a local Eagle Scout and former Harlem High football star for shooting a AR-15 in front of his ex-girlfriend’s home in Appling.
Lane Logue, 18, was charged last Thursday with reckless conduct in Columbia County. A warrant says he “recklessly shot approximately 10 rounds in front of the residence” on March 27. No one was hurt and no damage was reported, sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said.
Collin Ruff, 18, was also arrested for reckless conduct for allegedly driving the vehicle. Authorities say Ruff was driving a Nissan Pathfinder when Logue fired his father’s .223 caliber AR-15. Nether teen cooperated with the investigation or gave a statement, authorities said.
Logue was first arrested March 29 for making threats to shoot his ex-girlfriend or her house while holding an assault-style rifle during a bonfire with friends, authorities said. In that case, he was charged with terroristic threats & acts.
A young woman told officers she was at a bonfire party on Ridge Road in Appling with friends March 13. She said Logue was sitting in the back of his truck and showing off a AR-style rifle to everyone near him. The witness said one of her friends was talking to Logue’s ex-girlfriend to figure out if she was coming.
“Logue overheard the conversation, and he made the statement that if she showed up, or if he (Logue) saw her, he would use his gun on her,” the report says. “He also made statements that he would shoot at her house.”
Authorities contacted the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. She said that they had broken up in August and she had not had any contact with him since November. She also claimed that Logue called her place of employment, Smoothie King, on Dec. 15 to harass her and get her in trouble with her manager.
Meanwhile, the ex-girlfriend lives in the area where gunfire was heard March 27. A witness said he was out in his yard when he saw an unfamiliar vehicle, with loud exhaust, pass by his house headed towards the dead end of Suan Drive.
From the sheriff’s report: “The vehicle sat in the cul-de-sac for a period of time. The vehicle then passed by his house, headed towards Eubank Drive. He then heard between six and seven gunshots and heard the vehicle rapidly accelerated towards Eubank Drive and left the area. He described the vehicle as a light colored SUV similar to a Jeep.”
An officer found seven spent rifle casings on Suan Drive. Authorities contacted Logue’s father, who turned over a Smith & Wesson .223-caliber AR 15. That gun was analyzed to see if it matched the casings, Maj. Morris said.
Both teens are free on bond.
