The Augusta Commission has announced the dates of three public hearings required for the city to opt out of House Bill 581.
The commission on Thursday voted to hold the public hearings. State law requires them to be held if the city intends to “opt out” of the bill’s provisions.
House Bill 581 calls for an additional homestead exemption that limits annual property tax increases to a rate tied to inflation, rather than base them on locally-set revaluations.
Most local jurisdictions including the county school districts have announced plans to opt out. Augusta leaders said Thursday despite announcing the hearings a final decision has not been made.
The hearings are set for the following:
- 6 p.m. Feb. 4 at Diamond Lakes Regional Park, 103 Diamond Lakes Way
- 6 p.m. Feb. 11 at Warren Road Recreation Center, 300 Warren Road
- 11 a.m. Feb. 18 at Augusta Municipal Building, 535 Telfair St.
