A former quarterback for Ridge Spring-Monetta High School was shot Thursday night in rural Aiken County and died after a desperate effort by his family to get him help.
Remedee Jennings-Leaphart, 21, of Batesburg-Leesville, was shot around 6:45 p.m. Thursday at a residence on Pine Circle in Monetta, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.
“The victim was initially driven by unknown person(s) to his mother’s residence in Batesburg-Leesville,” Ables said. “The family then drove him to a medical clinic in Batesburg-Leesville where Lexington County EMS was called to transport the him to Lexington Medical Center. The victim was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival at 8:35 p.m. from a gunshot wound to the body.”
The victim went by Remedee Leaphart while attending Ridge Spring-Monetta High School, where he was an accomplished quarterback on the football team. Along with his wide receiver, he was selected to play in the 2022 GA-SC Border Bowl IX, according to online reports.
Jennings-Leaphart was being remembered online, including this message from Blackville-Hilda Athletics Director Paris Mason: “We send our deepest condolences and deepest sympathies to the family of ‘Remedee Jennings-Leaphart’ and the Ridge Spring Monetta High School Athletics Department/Family /Student Body. May you all find comfort in knowing that God will always be with you during this difficult time and in the coming days.”
The Coroner’s Office along with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are continuing with the investigation into his killing.
