In one of the most heinous acts in the political world this year, Georgia Democrats have decided to politicize the death of a child through miscarriage.

A recent press release sent by the Georgia Senate Democratic Caucus alleges a woman from Tifton, Ga., was arrested for having a miscarriage. The statement is disgusting, dishonest and plain wrong.

The incident report for the referenced case can be found here.

Selena Maria Chandler-Scott, 24 was arrested on one count of concealing the death of another person and one count of throwing away or abandonment of a dead body; not for having a miscarriage.

Sadly, something happened that resulted in the premature birth and death of Chandler-Scott’s child. She was not arrested for the death of the child. She was arrested for putting the baby in a bag and throwing it in the dumpster.

If Georgia Democrats are so offended that the woman was charged with a crime, then they should seek to change the law regarding disposing of human remains. Instead, State Senator Sally Harrell (D-Atlanta) chose to go on a rant from the State Senate chambers claiming that this arrest proves that any woman who has a miscarriage after six weeks and doesn’t notify the authorities has committed a felony.

“Every woman of reproductive age in Georgia who miscarries beyond the six-week marker of Georgia’s law can now be criminalized for a miscarriage,” Harrell said.

Without taking the time point out all of the flaws in Harrell’s argument as well as those who claim that Georgia’s law doesn’t protect women rights, I am posting a link to bill here so everyone can read it for themselves. Nowhere in there does it indicate that women will be prosecuted or at risk of prosecution for a miscarriage.

At first I struggled to reconcile in my mind if the woman should have been charged with a crime. My heart breaks for the death of the child and any suffering the mother has gone through as a result of that loss. But this wasn’t simply having a miscarriage of a tiny clump or cells or tissue as Sen. Harrell would have you believe. This baby was 19 weeks old.

To put that into perspective at 19 weeks here is what happens.

  • Baby is already likely kicking
  • Baby is roughly six inches long and just over a half a pound in weight
  • Baby has fingerprints
  • Baby is roughly size of a mango
  • Adult teeth are growing (baby teeth already grown)
  • The world’s youngest surviving baby was only 21 weeks (2 weeks older than in this case)

Yet, Sen. Harrell would have everyone believe this case is equivalent to someone having a miscarriage at seven or eight weeks. Harrell position is intellectually dishonest and morally repugnant.

A 24-year-old woman should know not to throw a baby in the garbage. Regardless of someone’s position, the woman broke the law and was rightfully charged.  A judge or jury can decide if she should go to jail or not. My gut feeling is that she will not spend any time in jail.

As long as Democrats continue to make false, outlandish claims, in particular about abortion, they will keep losing elections in Georgia.
