The City of Grovetown celebrated Fourth of July weekend with its annual free barbecue drive-thru at Liberty Park on Saturday, July 2.

This event has been continuing every Fourth of July for the last 35 years.

In years past, this event wasn’t only a drive-thru and residents could come and sit down and eat. Due to COVID-19, Grovetown decided to do a drive-thru in 2021.

“I believe I have seen more people this year than I have ever seen,” said Donna South, Event Coordinator for the City of Grovetown. “You have a few people in times past that like to come in and eat, but it was never successful like it is now with a drive-thru.”

Grovetown Leisure & Recreation hosted the event and barbecue plates were given out until there was no more food.

The barbecue and sides were catered by Fish Eye Grill out of Girard, Ga. More than 3,000 plates were made and served.

Gary Jones, the Mayor of Grovetown, says Grovetown continues to have this event every year to show appreciation to the city and the residents.

“We manage our money properly and doing so, we have money that is budgeted for events like this,” said Jones. “Our intent is to show the citizens how much we appreciate them and how much we celebrate the Fourth of July.”
