A clogged pipe is to blame for 10,000 gallons of sewage being dumped on Euchee Creek Trails.

According to a statement from the City of Grovetown, the overflow happened Thursday morning and was the result of rags and grease blocking a stretch of sewer pipe.

City employees worked with Columbia County to clear the blockage, restore flow and clean the area. Hydrated lime was spread out over affected areas and water quality sampling was initiated according to the City of Grovetown. Signs are posted in the area.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind our community of the harmful effects of putting rags, shirts, towels, mop heads, tampons and ‘flushable’ wipes down the drains,” said a press release. “These items do not break down and cause issues in our sewer lines and can clog pumps. Additionally, grease should never be dumped down a drain. The grease hardens as it cools and forms blockages throughout the system.”
