The City of Grovetown and the Grovetown Garden Club will be hosting a Blue Star Memorial Marker Dedication Ceremony at Veterans Park on Saturday, Nov. 12.

“We are very excited to further honor veterans and active servicemen and women in the City of Grovetown with our new Blue Star Memorial Marker,” said Grovetown Public Information Officer Jordan Johnson. “We hope that the public will join us at the dedication ceremony to show our appreciation to the men and women who make our way of life possible.”

According to the Garden Club of Georgia, the Blue Star Memorial Marker Program was established in 1944 at the end of World War II, and honors all who served in the United States Armed Forces – past, present, and future. Memorial markers and by-way markers were placed at parks, national cemeteries, veteran facilities and gardens.

“In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now NGC, Inc.) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way. The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war as well as in churches and businesses,” the National Garden Clubs’ website said.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a Veteran’s Day luncheon at Liberty Park. The ceremony is open to the public.
