The Columbia County Parks, Recreation and Events Department kicked off its annual Easter Egg Scramble at 10 a.m., Saturday morning at Patriots Park.

Programs and Events Manager Janet Wheatley said this year proved to be the egg hunt’s “busiest ever,” with crowds of families storming the field after some 5,000 easter eggs.

Toddlers and children up to age four started their hunt at about 10:30 a.m. Those ages five and up started their scramble at 12:30 p.m. In between, lines built up to take Easter pictures at Falling Stars Photos pastel-adorned camper, or their hair tinseled at the Fairy Rays tent.

The egg pursuits usually don’t last long, with swarms of kids already carrying bags and baskets of colorful bounties before festivities wrapped up at 1 p.m.

Plenty of participants stayed behind to watch the outdoor screening of the Easter Bunny-themed movie “Hop,” patronize food vendors or get their face painted.
