An A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet High School senior was as one of only two students in Georgia selected to serve as a delegate for the 2025 United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP).
Jaylin Deshawn Hillsman will represent Georgia during USSYP Washington Week, held March 1-8. Each year, two students from each state are selected to participate in an intensive weeklong program in Washington, D.C., where they will engage with national leaders, including U.S. senators, the president, a Supreme Court justice, and key officials from federal agencies.
In addition to the experience, Hillsman will receive a $10,000 college scholarship to support his undergraduate studies.
“Jaylin’s dedication and excellence in the areas of leadership, academics, and civic engagement are truly commendable. I have no doubt that he will represent A.R. Johnson and the state of Georgia with distinction during his participation in this program,” said Dr. Emily Driggers, principal of A.R. Johnson
Spotlight on Hillsman
Hillsman serves as senior class president at A.R. Johnson and is an active leader in HOSA Future Health Professionals, Key Club, and the student ambassador program.
As is the captain of the school’s tennis team and played a major role in the regional championship. He leads school tours, has participated in anti-bullying initiatives and more.
Hillsman plans to study political science in college, with future goals involving in business administration and community development.
Senate Youth Program history
The United States Senate Youth Program, established in 1962, is sponsored by the U.S. Senate and funded by The Hearst Foundations. The mission is to create a deeper understanding of the American political process and inspire students to pursue careers in public service.
