MIS committee approves reappointment of Board of Elections members

The Columbia County Management and Internal Services Committee discussed the appointment of Board of Elections members during the meeting on Tuesday, May 13. 

The committee approved moving forward with the reappointments of the incumbents, Larry Wiggins and Wanda Duffie. Wiggins represents the Democratic Party and Duffie represents the Republican Party. The reappointment is for a four-year term that will end June 30, 2029. The committee approved moving the item to the consent agenda for the full Columbia County Board of Commissioners.   

The MIS Committee approved a National Safe Boating Week proclamation that will be present at the May 20 Board of Commissioners meeting to the local Coast Guard Auxiliary.

“National Safe Boating Week is observed to bring attention to important life-saving tips for recreational boaters so that they can have a safer, more fun experience out on the water throughout the year. During National Safe Boating Week, the U.S. Coast Guard and its federal, state, and local safe boating partners encourage all boaters to explore and enjoy America’s beautiful waters responsibly,” according to the agenda document.

Development and Planning Services Committee

The Development and Planning Services Committee approved a proclamation recognizing May as Building Safety Month. It will be presented at the May 20 Board of Commissioners meeting. 

“The International Code Council recognizes May as Building Safety Month to highlight the importance of modern building codes and the essential role of code professionals in safeguarding our communities. The 2025 theme “Mission Possible: Building Safety Starts with You,” underscores the shared responsibility in ensuring safe, resilient, and sustainable buildings. By presenting this proclamation for approval, the Columbia County Building Standards Department seeks to formally acknowledge the importance of building safety and reaffirm the Columbia County Board of Commissioners commitment and support to protecting lives and property through effective code enforcement and public awareness,” according to the agenda document. 

The DPS Committee approved moving forward with the 2025 Local Road Assistance (LRA) application with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). According to the agenda document, GDOT sent an email stating LRA funds were included in the amended fiscal year 2025 budget and the allotment for Columbia County is $2,308,021.63 and does not require a match. An application must be submitted by June 15.

The projects the county is submitting include:

  • Newmantown Road for $493,221.75
  • Nature’s Way for $454,704.00
  • Mistletoe Road for $819,450.00
  • Winfield Road for $260,352.00
  • Winfield Hills for $418,122.50 

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will meet on 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20 in the auditorium at the Evans Government Complex.
