A new fitness center may be coming to Barton Chapel Road in Augusta, roughly midway between its intersections at Gordon Highway and Wrightsboro Road.

Last month, property owner Tammy Prosper submitted a petition to Augusta Planning for a special exception at her two parcels at 1712 and 1714 Barton Chapel Road totaling about an acre and a half.

A letter of intent and a preliminary concept plan show Prosper’s aim to develop an athletic training center at the site, a steel building between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet.

The location is currently zoned One-family Residential (R-1B), and Prosper’s request is that it be treated as Neighborhood Business (B-1). Tammy Prosper and co-owner Michael Prosper purchased the property from Robert and Lula Hester in June of 2021. Tammy Prosper notes in her letter that she had “inventoried the local area” and counted 14 residences and 17 businesses.

The two parcels comprise an undeveloped wooded area just north of a collection of homes. Across the street are both Trane Supply and, buffered behind it, the Barnett Crossing neighborhood.

The Augusta Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the request during its meeting on Feb. 3.
