North Augusta man killed, hours after neighbor is shot in drive-by

Carnell Nealous III, victim

Date: June 13, 2023

A local man was fatally shot Tuesday morning in a neighborhood near North Augusta Middle School, just hours after a neighbor was struck by gunfire while lying in her bed.

Aiken County authorities identified the homicide victim as 24-year-old Carnell Nealous III, who was found in the doorway of his home at 1242 Weston Street. The call came in at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday, sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said.

“Witnesses reported hearing the gunshots and saw a light-color white or gray sedan leaving the scene at a high rate of speed or driving away,” Capt. Abdullah said.

No one else was at the home at the time. Authorities have no leads or suspects.

But authorities are also investigating a drive-by shooting that happened at 4:42 a.m. Tuesday just a third of a mile away at 649 Hutchinson Drive. A 52-year-old woman was in her bed when she was suddenly struck by a bullet in her shoulder. She was taken to an Augusta hospital for treatment.

It’s unclear whether the two shootings are related.
