Richmond County students are invited to participate in a contest to celebrate Drinking Water Week May 1 through May 7.

The Augusta Utilities department is sponsoring a contest for all Richmond County elementary school students in grades K-5.

“We have a large homeschool community here in Augusta. And we really want to include them as well as the private schools. I think sometimes we do exclude the independent private schools, but we’re opening it up to all students in Richmond County,” said Public Information Officer Leadra Collins.

Students are asked to color a fire hydrant in bright, vivid colors. Forms are available at the utilities department’s customer service locations on Peach Orchard Road and Walker Street. Forms are also being sent to the schools.

Collins said they plan to hang some of the entries in the two customers service locations.

Three winners will be selected.

“We want to pick the top three and those top three, we are going to look and identify a hydrant near the school that they attend and duplicate their rendering. We’re going to paint the real hydrant as best we can, as close to their picture as we can,” Collins said.

All entries must be received by or postmarked no later than April 18.

“I’m excited to see just how many entries we get. Before the pandemic we received like over 300 entries for one of our coloring contests for Drinking Water Week. So, I thought we can top that,” said Collins.

The three winners will be notified April 25. They will be invited to the May 3 commission meeting to be recognized.

Drinking Water Week, sponsored by the American Water Works Association, has been observed the first week of May for more than 40 years.
