A Burke County Sheriff’s deputy arrested two intoxicated people, one of them a juvenile, after they allegedly left a party at the home of Burke County Manager Merv Waldrop on Dec. 10.

In a statement released by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the officer was on routine patrol in the parking lot of Taylor Brothers Express on Hwy. 25 North when a car entered the lot. The officer observed a passenger exit the vehicle and then the driver exited with a firearm.

The two men appeared to be arguing as the officer approached. According to the statement, Barrs had to repeatedly order the driver to put down the handgun.

Barrs then witnessed a 15-year-old boy exit the vehicle from a window, and he told Barrs that he and the two men were at a party at Waldrop’s home and had left to purchase more alcohol and, allegedly, marijuana.

The driver, identified as Davis Beckham of Madison, Ga., was arrested for driving under the influence and released on bond.

The juvenile was given a breathalyzer test and registered .16, double the legal limit and was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor. He was later released into the custody of his parents.

The passenger, Tyler McKenna of Hephzibah, Ga., was not charged.

When reached by phone, Waldrop declined to comment, citing the pending investigation.

According to the statement, the case has been assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division for further investigation.
