Those involved with building the first hospital in Columbia County now begin the next step.

The Georgia Supreme Court decided not to hear an appeal filed by Doctors Hospital, clearing the way for planning and construction.

A spokeswoman for AUMC said hospital leadership will make some decisions regarding design and construction. She said artist renderings released in 2017 may be changed based on current needs.

Columbia County Commission Chairman Doug Duncan said he hopes to meet next week to begin the process.

“They own the land and now there’s a road in front of it,” he added.

The new hospital will be built on Gateway Boulevard across from the Columbia County Exhibition Center. County records show the land was purchased February 7, 2017.

Duncan said they did not know the decision would be released on Tuesday, calling it a “pleasant surprise.”
