A Georgia Avenue business got the go ahead for a mural on its building Monday.

Mel Lambert, owner of The Beveled Edge, applied for permission to have a mural painted on the side of the building at 526 Georgia Ave. The mural will be on the Spring Grove Avenue side of the building.

After the North Augusta City Council unanimously approved the request, members voted to appoint a review board to handle future applications.

La’Stacia Reese of the city’s Planning and Development Department will serve as coordinator for the five-member board.

The other members will be Avery Spears-Mahoney, executive director of North Augusta Forward; Jennifer Elliot, a member of the Downtown Merchant’s Alliance Design Committee; Garland Gooden, board member of the Arts and Heritage Center and Jeannine Steinkuhl of the Crowne Plaza.

“All of these individuals represent agencies in the downtown area,” Assistant City Administrator Rachelle Moody said. “These individuals will serve at the pleasure of council once appointed.”

Councilwoman Jenafer McCauley said she felt it was a great mix of people to appoint to the board.

“I’m excited there is someone from the Arts and Heritage Center, so there is an art representative there. I also think it’s great that the rest of the individuals are interested in seeing our downtown progress. This a good mix of people,” she said.

The area defined as the downtown stretches from Georgia Avenue at Spring Grove Avenue down to Riverside Village.

The resolution naming the members of the review board was approved unanimously.
