RCSO deputy involved in Burke County fatality that killed elderly driver

Deputy Ty Dailey

Date: March 30, 2023

A Richmond County deputy struck and killed an elderly driver last weekend in Burke County, according to authorities.

Deputy Ty Dailey was traveling through Burke County in a patrol car Sunday when the elderly driver of a Toyota Rav4 “failed to yield and entered into the path” of the sheriff’s vehicle, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The driver of the Toyota, 75-year-old Jay Fager of Blythewood, S.C., suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

“The passenger of the Toyota and the Richmond County Deputy suffered injuries and were transported to the Augusta University Medical Center,” the GSP said.

Dailey was headed to Brunswick for a training class when the wreck happened on Highway 25 South at Cohen Road, authorities said.

A GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting with the Burke County fatality.

Deputy Dailey is the same officer featured in last month’s WRDW investigation for unnecessary use of force. He was disciplined for putting a suspect in a headlock in October and striking him several times in the head and then not reporting it as a “use of force,” which requires documentation.

The deputy is also the same officer who received lacerations on his face, a swollen eye and injuries to both elbows in 2021 during a struggle with an Augusta mayoral candidate at a Circle K on Washington Road.
