Jail on lockdown as multiple deputies under investigation for smuggling contraband

A criminal investigation is underway into multiple deputies involved with the Charles B. Webster Detention Center after several were accused of smuggling contraband into the jail.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office released a report Tuesday indicating that inmates were in possession of tobacco, cell phones and other contraband.

The investigation will likely lead to multiple arrests, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The jail currently remains on lockdown, and visitation has been suspended until further notice.

No further information has been released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
