A man was fatally shot at Olmstead Homes on Saturday night as Augusta experienced another in a string of homicides this month.

Richmond County deputies responded at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to the 2100 block of B Street in reference to a shooting, Sheriff’s Sgt. William McCarty said in a press release. Deputies located the body of a male victim with at least one gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Photos from the scene show a truck crashed through a brick structure.

Witnesses describe hearing gunshots in the area, including one neighbor who said he heard two different handguns being shot.

“Almost seems like the first three shots missed and the intended target shot back and got him. Definitely two different caliber pistols,” the witness said on Facebook.

He said there were a lot of children outside, but none were harmed.

No suspect or motive was announced. The homicide marks the sixth Richmond County homicide in April. Sheriff Richard Roundtree has blamed gang activity for at least two of the killings and pledged “selected enforcement action to target those criminals who are participating in gangs and the associated gun violence and drug trafficking.”

“This will include proactive teams conducting operations in areas recently affected by gang activity and other known high crime areas. Deputies will also conduct road checks in targeted areas,” Sheriff Roundtree said in a press release.

Only one arrest has been made in this month’s six slayings.
