New dates of Feb. 8 – 12 have been announced for the I-20 and Lewiston Road closures
“Predicted weather conditions for the weekend of Jan. 25-29 are not conducive to the work that needs to be accomplished to be able to complete the Diverging Diamond Interchange. We apologize for any confusion this may cause,” said a press release from the county.
Starting on noon on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024, and lasting through 6 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, the contractor for the Lewiston Road Widening Project, ER Snell, will implement a 90-hour road closure and detour of Lewiston Road and Horizon South Parkway (SR388) at I-20 Exit 190, weather permitting.
To finalize work related to the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) configuration conversion, weather permitting, the road closure will prevent any traffic access between I-20 Exit 190 and Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway.
“This closure is required to construct the remaining portions of the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) that cannot be done while traffic is crossing the bridge or using ramps,” stated a press release from Columbia County.
The work will include realignments of lanes, pouring curb and gutter, pouring concrete islands, placing pavement markings, and reconfiguring, reprogramming and testing of signal equipment.
“All of this work is required to place traffic in the new configuration,” stated the county press release.
The closure will also stop any traffic for the I-20 Exit 190 Overpass, Lewiston Road between I-20 West Ramp and William Few Parkway, and the Horizon South Parkway between I-20 East Ramp and Gateway Boulevard.
During the closures, a detour will be posted for the interchange closure that the county will utilize.
The detour will cause traffic to be directed from I-20 Exit 183 Appling Harlem Highway (US 221/SR 74) to the West, and I-20 Exit 194 South Belair Road/Jimmie Dyess Parkway (SR 383) to the East.
According to a press release from the county, Columbia Couty and Snell will have staff monitoring and managing traffic conditions at and along the detour route as necessary.
“Whenever you approach a work zone: slow down; allow extra distance between vehicles; watch for advanced warning signs; obey road crew flaggers; and expect the unexpected,” stated a press release from Columbia County. “If possible, please plan to take an alternate route and/or allow additional time for commuting during this timeframe.”
