Rose Zhang holds on in 2nd round of sudden death play to win ANWA

Rose Zhang of the United States plays her stroke from the No. 3 tee during the final round of the Augusta National Women's Amateur at Augusta National Golf Club, Saturday, April 1, 2023.

Date: April 01, 2023

Rose Zhang started the day 13 under with a 5 stroke lead. That lead dwindled as Jenny Bae played an aggressive round catching her Zhang on No. 17 to tie and force sudden death play. After they both scored Par on No. 18 in sudden death they moved to No. 10 where Bae hit here second shot well past the green into the trees and her shot out of the trees into the bunker.

Saturday was Bae’s second appearance in Augusta and Zhang’s fourth.

Bae hit birdie after an amazing approach shot on 17 and Zhang missed a good opportunity for birdie on 16 bringing the score even at 9 under Par.

Going into the last four holes Zhang’s lead had dropped to just two strokes with Bae hot on her heels and Lignell only 3 strokes away. A bogey on 14 set Lignell back taking her back to four shots out of first and ending her chances of catching the lead.

Play was suspended at 10:30 AM due to inclement weather but resumed 3 hours and 20 minutes later. Prior to play being suspended both Rose Zhang in first place and Andrea Lignell in second dropped multiple shots after several bogeys.

Jenny Bae, a University of Georgia student, built momentum after the break with a birdie on Nos. 9 and 13 bringing her within 1 stroke of the lead.

Zhang a Stanford University student, put a ball in the water on 15 scoring a bogey and shrinking her lead to just one stroke before Bae caught her on number 17.
