BROMELAND, JAMES STEPHAN - 05/10/2022 - Aggravated Assault, Battery, Terroristic Threats and Acts

Date: May 16, 2022

A hook-up at a local hotel turned brutal May 10, leading to the arrest of one man on aggravated assault, terroristic threats and battery.

According to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies responded around 1 a.m. May 10 to the Hyatt Place hotel and met the victim in the lobby.

She had been having an on and off again sexual relationship with James Bromeland, 45, who she described as her “sugar daddy,” and she was the “sugar baby.”

The report did not indicate where the victim or Bromeland lived, but it said they’d traveled separately to the Hyatt Place hotel where they had separate rooms.

She recorded the incident on her phone and played the recording for deputies, the report continued.

“James`mood was off, so (the victim) thought he was mad at her. (She) texted James, and they got into an argument because he thought she was going to expose their relationship to James`wife,” the report stated.

That’s when the night got violent.

“He grabbed her phone and put it in his back pocket. She said that at one point, James held a knife to her throat and kept saying that tonight was her last night, and he was going to kill her. During the assault, James also placed his hand on (her) throat and his other hand over her mouth causing her airflow to be restricted and an inability to scream for help,” the report said.

The victim played the recording for deputies.

“Don’t f– move I swear to God I will slit your f– throat,” the incident report said was on the recording. “Text your kids. Tell them you love `em and that you`ll always love `em because they`re never gonna see you a f–gain.”

The report also said, “There are only two voices heard during the recording. (The victim) identified the female voice as hers and the male voice as James. The recording corroborated (her) statement.”

Deputies went to Bromeland’s room, where he said he was in town on business and had been asleep. He denied any altercation with the victim and denied he was the person in question on the recording.

“I played part of the recording for James, and he denied it was his voice,” the deputy’s report continued.  “I advised him that he had a very unique voice and that he was easily identifiable as the male in the recording. He began laughing and said that it wasn’t him but that he thought it was funny I thought it was.”

The deputy reported the victim had a black eye as well as facial swelling and scratch marks on her neck.

Bromeland was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center.
