A man said to be the driver in the drive-by killing of an autistic man at Olmstead Homes will remain in jail.

Family members of Kyan Bowie, 22, filled the state side of the courtroom at a Friday bond hearing for Evyn O’Conner, one of five suspects facing murder charges in Bowie’s Oct. 15 death.

Augusta Circuit Assistant District Attorney Kevin Davis said the drive-by shooting at the housing project was retaliation for an earlier killing involving the Loyalty Over Everything gang.

Bowie, who was autistic and attending a family birthday party at Olmstead, was not the intended target, he said.

O’Conner’s attorney P.J. Campanaro said he drove the car for his mentor and did not know one of the passengers intended to commit a drive-by shooting. The Graniteville man has no criminal history, she said.

Bowie’s family members were adamant none of the suspects go free. “I know God forgives, but I won’t,” his sister said.

Also jailed without bond in Bowie’s death are Jaquez Davis and Diriuss Redd, 17. Police said Jamari Williams, 19, and Lawrence Stephens, 19, are also sought in the case.

Richmond County Superior Court Judge Amanda Heath denied O’Conner’s request for bond.
